What is Quarter Midget Racing?
In the United States today there are over 50 Quarter Midget Tracks. Boys and
girls drive the open wheel race cars which are approximately one-fourth scale of
a full midget race car. This motor sport is sanctioned by the Quarter Midgets of
America (QMA), a national association which provides the rules for racing these
cars.
Who Got Their Racing Career Started in a Quarter
Midget?
Famous race car drivers who got their start in quarter midgets include Jeff
Gordon, Bobby Labonte, Ryan Newman, Billy Boat and Jason Leffler. And many of
these drivers pick quarter midgets as the vehicle of choice for their kids - the
son of NASCAR driver Mark Martin was a quarter midget racer. Bobby Labonte's
boys race quarter midgets. And Ernie Irvan's son, Jared attended the FinishLine
Quarter Midget School!
FinishLine Racing school graduates Dean Cornelius, Brad Kuhn and Michelle
Theriault also got their start in quarter midgets.
What is a Quarter Midget?
A Quarter Midget (QM) is a racing vehicle built for children ages 5 - 15. It is
a scaled down version of a midget race car. The open-wheeled, fully suspended
cars are specially designed for racing on a 1/20 mile track. The cars weighs at
a minimum 160 pounds. These cars are equipped with nerf bars, bumpers, and a
roll cage to withstand the occasional bumps and flips that are part of any form
of racing.
How Fast do they go?
The speed of the cars depends on the engine class and the track its being raced
at. Quarter Midgets are raced at both dirt and asphalt tracks that are specially
designed for Quarter Midget Racing. A fast race car will complete a full lap in
about 8 seconds, reaching approximately 30 mph in the straights. When drivers
get older and their skill becomes better they can advance to a faster, more
powerful class.
How Much does it cost?
QM racing has a relatively low initial cost to get involved. Many second-hand
cars in good condition can be found and are perfect for starter cars. The cost
can run from $700 for an older used car to $7,000 for a new car set up for the
faster classes.
